Media "Bildung" and Media Education

Media "bildung" and media education builds on PED1014 Media Education and Media Competence, but can also be combined with other educational and media subjects within bachelor or master degree. The subject offers a more profound insight into theoretical and methodological problems in media education. The subject matter is studied in the light of challenges introduced by the new media technology in the globalized world. The subject will focus on the interaction between the school culture, youth culture and convergent media culture. Special attention is paid to media education from an empowerment perspective. Ethical problems connected to media culture are also discussed.

The students shall have thorough knowledge on and theoretical insight into:
- Research traditions and methods in media education.
- Perspectives on media bildung and media literacy.
- Challenges for media education in the globalized world.
- Perspectives on empowerment and participation in the communication society.
- Ethical challenges in contemporary media culture.
