Principal Instrument 3 with Ear Training

The course is based on MUSV1021 Principal Instrument 2 and MUSV1018 Ear Training and Improvisation, and further develops a higher level on the student's principal instrument and ear training skills.

The principal instrument instruction continues to develop the student's principal instrument/vocal skills, including technique, methods, genre knowledge, theory, and communication tied to a chosen repertoire, as well as broader general technical exercises.

The ear training develops the student's ability to define structures in music, translating them from sounding expressions to notation or vice versa.

Knowledge:

An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV2023 has deepened knowledge of

• Vocal/instrumental directions and styles within his or her main musical area/genre.
• Instrumental, rehearsal and practice techniques and ways of conveying music alone and in ensembles.
• Principles of melody, rhythm, harmony, and form.
• Music theory.

Skills:

An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV2023

• Can work in a goal-oriented and independent fashion.
• Can rehearse and present a vocal/instrumental repertoire, with an emphasis on personal expression, from a broad field within their genre, at a higher level than what is required in MUSV1021.
• Can show musicality and musical communication skills, technical skills, knowledge of styles and insight into music theory in practical performance at a higher level than what is required in MUSV1021.
• Can show musicality, technical skill and music theoretic insight in practical performance at a higher level than what is required in MUSV1018.

Principal instrument: individual and group instruction with satisfactory participation. To be able to take the final exam, the student must attend a minimum of 80% of the classes.

Students with a need for piano accompaniment who have classical vocals, strings, brass or woodwind as their principal instrument, will get 4 x 30 min. accompaniment in preparation for their exam, and 1 hour for the exam itself.

Because of overlap due to comparable learning goals, students can only register once for the individual levels of instruction within the Department of Music’s principal instrument courses.

Ear training: group instruction. In order to take the final exam, satisfactory participation in compulsory instruction (minimum 80 %) including a final test and delivery of up to 8 exercises is required.
