Basic Music Technology

The course is comprised of the following main elements: Introduction to music representation, basic acoustics and signal processing, computer-assisted arranging and composing, introduction to computer-based techniques for recording and processing of sound.

Knowledge:

The candidate
- has knowledge about basic principles of MIDI and sampling
- knows how various music software can be used as tools for arranging and composing
- has knowledge about the fundamentals of sound
- knows the basic techniques for sound synthesis and signal processing

Skills:

The candidate
- can apply music software to arrange, compose and produce music
- can use applications like Max/MSP or PureData (PD) as well as Csound to create sound synthesis, digital signal processing and musical sequences
- can apply music software in concert situations
- can write reports that describe esthetic and technical choices related to computer-based music productions

Practicallly adapted lectures: 2 hours per week for 12 weeks during autumn and 13 weeks during spring. Lectures, Group instruction and exercises.
Assessment: One week home examination where the students produce a CD with an accompanying written report.
