Aural Training A

By a practical and performative approach the subject aims to contribute to consciousness-raising and to enhance the skills in the basic elements scale, intervals, melody, chords, cadenza, rythm and form- mainly within a fram of tonality. The subject is closely connected to MUSP4152 Harmony A. The course aims to mirror music's various means of expression and ability to cross the borders of styles and genre. Improvisation is essential. Piano is a essential tool in the instruction.

Knowledge:

The candidate:

• has basic knowledge about rhythm and harmonic character in connection with scale, interval, melody, chords, cadenza and other central parameters of expression
• has knowledge about methods and good strategic approaches to listening, transcription and how to navigate in a musical material
• is highly conscious about the importance of aural skills in her/his own everyday life as a musician.

Skills:

The candidate:

• can improvise within defined musical frames; for example ostinato playing, sound, texture or the circle of fifths
• can imitate or notate simple sonorous music/folk music
• can sing melodies and harmonic progressions within the frame of major/minor tonality
• has basic skills in prima-vista singing
• has basic skills in reading rhythm, rhythmical coordination and techniques for subdivision
• can identify the most important phenomena of expression in tonal music, and use the ear in a performative perspective
• can use piano as a visualizing tool in her/his work with aural training, and also master basic figure playing in different genres.

Weekly instruction in groups, and group teaching on acoustic pianos. Chord symbols and simple accompaniment are emphasized.

Exemption from group instruction is granted to students who have taken MUSV1018 Ear Training and Improvisation, or equivalent courses, while the piano part (piano lessons with a joint concert) of this course must be completed by all students.

Weekly mandatory exercizes/assignments.

The instruction is mandatory and requires a minimum of 80% satisfactory participation.
