Knowledge development in practical-aesthetic school subjects

In this subject, students learn the basis for choosing and discussing positioning and methods for knowledge development within the practical-aesthetic school subjects of physical education, arts & crafts and music. The subject aims to develop an understanding of what research and development work entails within these subjects, and to strengthen the students' ability to critically reflect on researchable questions and knowledge development. The subject provides insight into scientific work by thematizing and discussing different research designs, research methods and scientific theoretical positioning in a collective and individual perspective. The subject further provides insight into how quality and research ethics are evaluated and expressed in various parts of the research process. Altogether, the course should enable the student to see the connections between scientific questions, theory, methodology and methods in research processes. Through the course, students will experience how different analysis methods and research designs can be used to illuminate and investigate current issues, and experience presenting and developing research ideas within their own practical-aesthetics school subject.

• Have in-depth knowledge of research methodology within the relevant practical-aesthetic school subjects

• Have insight into various scientific theories, research fields/traditions, scientific paradigms, research designs and methods

• Have knowledge of various scientific analyses

• Have knowledge of and be able to reflect independently on ethical issues in research

At the end of the course, the student is expected to

• Be able to describe, explain, discuss, critically reflect and apply different principles for methodological choices and analyses

• Be able to assess how different research designs and scientific philosophical positioning affect the kind of knowledge that can be developed in specific projects

• Be able to select and carry out relevant scientific analyses

• Be able to assess and take care of quality and ethical issues through all parts of a research process

• Have the competence to contribute in the entire research process linked to knowledge development within one's own practical-aesthetic school subject

General competence

At the end of the course, the student is expected to

• Have competence to carry out and contribute to research and development work within one's own practical-aesthetic school subject, including being able to make reasoned choices about research design in one's own master's thesis

• Be able to analyze and assess the relationship between empirical knowledge, theoretical and methodological issues in both a theoretical and practical way

• Be able to assess qualities and research ethics in own and others' research
