Memory, things and places

The course is an introduction to an interdisciplinary theoretical field where concepts like memory, materiality and place are central. Two important questions are how memory is being created and reproduced and what kind of processes and institutions that contribute to shaping a culture's images of the past. The course will also focus on central questions in this field of theory, such as the relationship between individual and collective memory and the relationship between memory and history. In addition to the theoretical introduction, the course focus on the practical application of analytical approaches in discussions of relevant examples.

A candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome according to the course curriculum, defined as knowledge and skills:

Knowledge:

The candidate

• has good overview of international theories of memory
• has good understanding of how central institutions are taking part in and are communicating understanding and conceptions within the field

Skills:

The candidate

• can explain and discuss central themes and concepts from international memory theory
• can use theories of memory in independent analysis of cultural products communicating history and producing memories
• is able to apply knowledge and insights from this topic in further in-depth studies within the field

Lectures, excursions and seminars. Up to 10 short written assignments. Students should make every effort to attend all teaching as the obligatory assignments/exercises are closely related to the topics being taught.
