Medieval Art and Architecture

The course explores questions regarding European and Norwegian Medieval art and architecture, where both objects and monuments and their theoretical frameworks as well as art historical methodology are introduced and discussed.

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will have:
- knowledge of central aspects of medieval art and architecture, Norwegian and European.
- knowledge of important terms and concepts in the study of medieval art and architecture
- knowledge of the main methods employed in the study of medieval art
- knowledge of the importance of and interpretation of art and architecture in the Middle Ages

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will know how to:
- identify and analyse central monuments in medieval art and architecture
- describe and characterise art historical artefacts from the period
- be able to discuss the relevance of previous scholarship regarding specific artefacts
- present his/her knowledge and reflections on the subject in speech and writing

Lectures and seminars, and usually also field trips to relevant monuments and museums.

More on assessment: The final assessment is based on a 6 days take-home examination in 4000 - 4800 words and an grade-adjusting oral examination. The examination is given a letter grade.

Students are required to check the result of their assignments on It's Learning.

Students are required to stay updated on any information given by the department or course director; either via It's learning, Innsida, or on bulletin boards.

This course is taught in Norwegian only.
