Childhood Obesity

A basic understanding of normal growth and energy requirements in children in accordance with age will be given, and thence an understanding of weight deviation and development of obesity in generally healthy children as well as in children with obesity related syndromes. Further, an introduction will be given to the most important physical, psychological and quality of life conditions in childhood obesity, included eating disorders. Guidelines to recommended diets and physical activity pursuant to age will also be taught, in addition to new knowledge of the significance of dietetic changes and level of physical activity. The amount of overweight decrease will be thoroughly discussed. An understanding of the significance of parents as change agents will be emphasized, and family based communication techniques focusing on coping will be taught.

After completing the course KLH3105, the student:
- have obtained a solid insight into the development of childhood obesity pursuant to age, as well as obtaining knowledge of physical, psychological and social conditions in obese children
- is acquainted with current guidelines of both prevention and treatment of childhood obesity
- can discuss the complexity of counselling lifestyle changes in a child as part of a whole family
- can give an account of how to converse with children about obesity and obesity treatment, as well as how parents can be guided in working with these children

Lectures, guidance and participation in clinical work and pasient education. Attendance on lectures is compulsory. All lectures are given in Norwegian. In re-scheduled examinations, new assessment or few registered students the assessment form may be changed to an oral examination. The course may be cancelled if too few students register for the examination.
