Analytical Chemical Separation Techniques

Techniques of modern analytical separation and quantification methods are presented, including capillary electromigration methods, 2-dimensional chromatography, 'tandem techniques' based on on-line coupling of separation methods and spectroscopy, laboratory-scale preparative chromatography, method development concepts for gas and liquid chromataography, the solvation parameter model of retention.
This course has the same content and is taught together with KJ8058.

At the end of the course a student should :

- Be able explain the principles of a wide range of important liquid and gas chromatographic methods of analysis as well as electromigration techniques.
- Be able to evaluate strengths and limitations of the different chromatographic and electromigration techniques with respect to specific analytical problems and to sample properties.
- Be able to choose, and plan the use, of suitable chromatographic or electromigration techniques for actual analytical problems based on a good knowledge of the potentially relevant methods.
- Be able to judge the quality of his/her own, or someone elses, analytical results from chromatographic or electromigration methods and to evaluate the chosen operational procedures
- Be able to understand, and adapt to own requirements, published procedures in this field, e.g. to adapt to locally available technical resources or to more modern practices.
- Be able to apply techniques of chromatography or electromigration separations in an effective and reasonable way after only a minimum of practical teaching.

The number of credits are reduced with 7,5 if a theme which corresponds to KJ3058 is chosen within a specialization course in organic chemistry (TKJ4525).
The number of credits are reduced with 7,5 for KJ8058 (planned new PhD course).

Projects or laboratory exercises (optional) and presentation and discussion of relevant published material may be a part of the course. English teaching by request.
