Learning outcomes

Knowledge - The candidate is able to:

  • Explain the basic operation of the PN-junction/Si-diode, zener-diode, bipolar transistor and FET-transistor.
  • Explain how the transistor can be used as a switch or an amplifier.
  • Explain the principle of operation for DC-DC voltage converters (switched and linear).
  • Explain the structure of Li-ion batteries and the charging cycles of these.
  • Explain the operation of the small-signal and the differential amplifiers.
  • Explain the difference between class A, B, AB and D power amplifiers.
  • Explain the principle of operation of oscillator circuits.
  • Explain how MOSFET transistors can be used in digital electronic circuits.
  • Explain the non-ideal properties of the op-amp.

Skills - the candidate is able to:

  • Perform theoretical calculations of basic electronic circuits based on diodes and transistors.
  • Use computer tools to simulate electronic circuits.
  • Perform measurements and troubleshooting on basic electronic circuits.
  • Reflect on differences between theoretical results based on ideal models and measurements of corresponding practical connections.
  • Document laboratory work performed.

General competence - the candidate is able to:

  • Know Norwegian and English scientific expressions for important components and circuits in the course.
  • Find and apply technical information from datasheets for components.

Teaching methods

Lectures. Mandatory exercises. Mandatory laboratory work.

The laboratory tasks including delivery of journals of performed laboratory work, are mandatory. The number of exercises and laboratory tasks are given at semester start. The mandatory activities must be delivered according to given deadlines and must be approved to be allowed to take the exam.
