About this course

Content

Diodes. Diode applications. Zener diode. Transistor (bipolar and FET). The transistor both as switch and amplifier (AC equivalent circuit). Non-ideal operational amplifier. Power amplifier. Oscillators. Voltage regulators.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge The candidate must:

a. Understand the basic behavior of Si diodes, bipolar transistor and FET transistor.

b. Explain the use of diodes to create rectifiers, voltage limiters and lock circuits.

c. Explain how the zener diode can be used as voltage reference.

d. Explain the behavior of the transistor switch and amplifier element.

e. Explain the difference between power amplifiers in class A, B, AB and D.

f. Explain how MOSFET transistors can be used in digital electronic circuits.

g. Explain non-ideal characteristics of the operational amplifier.

h. Explain the principle behavior of oscillator circuits.

i. Explain the principle behavior of voltage regulation with linear and switched power supplies.

Skills The candidate shall be able to:

a. Use computer tools to simulate electronic circuits.

b. Perform measurements and troubleshooting on simple electronics circuits.

c. Assess the causes of differences between theoretical constructions based on ideal models and practical constructions.

d. Documenting laboratory work done. General competence

The candidate must:

a. Know Norwegian and English subject terms used for components and circuits.

b. Reflect on professional ethical issues.

c. Find and evaluate technical information from data sheets of various electrical components.

Teaching methods

Lectures, Exercises, Laboratory work. Compulsory exercises. The laboratory assignments are compulsory with the submission of a journal/protocol that documents the performed laboratory work. The number of exercises and laboratory assignments is stated at the start of the semester. The compulsory activities must be delivered according to specified deadlines, and all must be approved in order to take the exam.
