About this course
Content
Introduction to the discipline cellular pathology with focus on basic techniques in theory and practice: preparations of cells and tissue for light microscope, processing and microtomy, staining theory, staining methods and normal cervical cytology. The course includes an interdisciplinary approach to immunological techniques: basic theory and practice, antibodies as an analytical tool, important methods used to analyse different biological samples (fluids, cells and tissue). Troubleshooting and quality assessment of application methods, interpretation of the results, will be emphasized.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
The student can:
- Explain how cells and tissues are prepared, and how different staining techniques demonstrate structures in cells and tissues.
- Recognize the morphology of cells and tissues using light microscopy.
- Validate the color quality of histological preparations.
- Explain principles and create principle sketches for immunological methods.
- Describe morphology and recognize cytological images of cervical preparations in normal conditions.
- Can assess the value of histological sample material and is familiar with current HSE conditions and is familiar with the procedure for a histological sample
Skills:
The student can:
- Apply histological, immunological and cytological techniques within pathological hospital laboratories.
- Apply procedures for the safe execution of laboratory tasks in accordance with regulations for health, environment and safety in a pathology laboratory
Competence:
The student can:
- Use and convey their knowledge of pathological techniques within pathological hospital laboratories, and be proven in health, environment and safety (HSE) within histological hospital laboratories.
- Solve problems both independently and in groups, and can evaluate and communicate the results in writing/orally.
Teaching methods
Lectures. 6 laboratory courses, including written and oral assessments. The laboratory courses are part of the compulsory practical training of the study program. The laboratory exercises will be carried out in groups or individually. The laboratory exercises, work processes and results has to be recorded individually. Time schedule may include afternoons. Expected workload: Lectures: 28 hrs Laboratory courses: 42 hrs Self study 130 hrs
