About this course
Content
Microorganisms; Structure, structure, and host interactions. Seeding, aerobic/anaerobic culture, identification and resistance determination of bacteria. The structure and function of the immune system. Antigen/Antibody reactions.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
The student
- has knowledge of the immune system's structure and organization.
- has knowledge of how the cells in the immune system work and cooperate in an immune response.
- has knowledge of the structure of microorganisms and their interaction with the host.
Skills:
The student
- how microorganisms are analyzed and examined as part of making a diagnosis and regarding the follow-up of treatment.
- proper treatment of different types of human biological sample materials, with knowledge of how analytical, pre- and post-analytical conditions may affect the analytical result.
- the use of analytical instruments and laboratory equipment for use in medical laboratories for microbiology and immunology.
Competence:
The student
- mastery of methods and tasks regarding biomedical laboratory science in a structured and accurate manner, in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and procedures, and assessment of a method's possibilities, limitations and sources of error to ensure reliable analytical results.
- how to handle different types of human biological specimens and their corresponding results and information.
- the skills and competencies needed to interpret an order, gather a sample correctly, send human biological materials and convey test results in Norwegian in writing, orally and at the correct time.
- finding, assessing and following current guidelines for protection against chemical substances and biological material and understand their impact on the organism as well as their environment consequences with focus on HSE.
Teaching methods
Lectures, seminars and internal practical training consisting of 2 physical and 1 digital laboratory course. Written assignments and dissemination of professional knowledge through oral presentations. The work rate is estimated to total 200 hours, of which 32 hours lectures, 27 hours laboratory courses and 141 hours of own effort.
