About this course

Content

The immune system structure and organization. Soluble molecules, innate- and adaptive immunity. Antibodies and antibody specificity. Lymphocytes and antigen recognition. Antigen processing and development of effector-cells. Regulation of the immune response. Immunity to microorganisms. Vaccines and immunological techniques..

Learning outcomes

Knowledge: The student

  • have knowledge of the structure and function of the immune system
  • have knowledge of innate and adaptive immunity
  • have knowledge of antibodies in response to stimulation
  • have knowledge of how antigen from bacteria and viruses is processed and presented to lymphocytes
  • have knowledge of effector mechanisms in response to stimulation
  • have knowledge of the regulation of the immune response
  • have knowledge of vaccines
  • have knowledge of research and development in immunology

Skills: The student

  • should be able to perform basic immunological techniques
  • be able to explain how immunological techniques are used, for example in detecting infections

Competence: The student

  • have general competence on the immune response to infections
  • have an overview of immunological reactions and how these are regulated
  • are able to follow development and research in the field

Teaching methods

Expected number of working hours in total 200. Of these, teacher-led hours constitutes approximately 70 hours.

Pedagogical methods: Lectures and Laboratory course, exercises of 4 hours, with reporting.

Mandatory work requirements: Compulsory laboratory course with approved reports .
