About this course
Content
The course comprises medical biochemistry, pathology and pharmacology including preanalytical issues and quality assurance in medical laboratories and nuclear medicine.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge - the students:
- will gain knowledge of key topics in clinical chemistry and develop the ability to document the quality of laboratory instruments and technical procedures
- will become acquainted with preanalytical sources of errors in laboratory medicine
- will acquire knowledge about normal and pathological processes in the human body, and how laboratory results can reflect diseases in one or more of the body's organs
- will be able to assess the plausibility of laboratory results and learn how results were compound to a laboratory report which is an important part of the medical decision making process
- will get fundamental knowledge of how specific biochemical principles are being used to measure or determine certain substances. This is important in choosing right analytical methods and assessing analytical quality
- will get insights into current research and development in different specialities
Skills - the students:
- are able to understand the clinical relevance of laboratory results and to evaluate the validity of results of the test, i.e. quality of the analysis in comparison to the medical problem
- are able to handle different tools and laboratory techniques and to improve their vocabulary skills in laboratory medicine.
- independently search for and aquire information relevant to the subject
Competence - students:
- have skills in professional holistic view against main subjects
- are able to keep themselves updatet with national and international recommendations and guidelines in medical biochemistry
- are able to communicate technical issues with other persons with or without professional expertise
- are able to explain the use of measuring methods in radiology and radiation protection
Teaching methods
Educational methods: Lectures and compulsory laboratory assignments. Emphasis on student active ways of learning such as student projects.
The course has an expected workload of approx. 200 h, where organized teaching makes up: approx. 32 h lectures, approx. 36 h laboratory course.
Compulsory requirements: 100% attendance in laboratory course including related assignments. Practical test.
