About this course

Content

Introduction to carbon compounds involving structure, characteristics, nomenclature, analysis of conformation, resonance, inductive effect, isomerism and stereo-chemistry. Introduction to reaction mechanisms: acid-base, reduction-oxidation, addition, substitution (SN1, SN2), elimination (E1, E2). Reaction mechanisms of ether and epoxidies, aromatic substitution, acetal and imino formation, aldol reaction. Reaction mechanisms of carboxyl acids and theirs derivates.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge -the student is able to:

  • explain nomenclature, characteristics and structure of organic compounds
  • explain basic reaction mechanisms, evaluate competitive reactions and identify what sort of reaction mechanisms
  • evaluate health and enviromental risk working with organic compounds

Skill - the student is able to:

  • utilize procedures for safely carrying out laboratory exercises according to the official regulations (Health, Safety and Enviromental (HSE))
  • be conscious about their own and group members` role in teamwork
  • use digital tools to draw organic molecules

Qualification - the student is able to:

  • solve problems individually and in teamwork including communicate the result orally and by a written report
  • evaluate health and enviromental consequences of working with organic compounds
  • understands the importance of chemistry in the development of a sustainable society

Teaching methods

The topic consists of lectures, theoretical exercises and laboratory course. Expected total workload per student: 200 hours. Approximately 70 of those hours are scheduled activities such as lectures, theoretical exercises, group work and laboratory exercises.
