About this course

Content

Organisation of the specialist health care in Norway with a particular focus on the medical/diagnostic laboratories
Reflection over the concepts of health, illness, disease and quality of life.
The role of diagnostic test in diagnosis, treatment and prognosis, including diagnostic sensitivity and specificity
Introduction to medical technology and ethics
Introduction to medical research and ethics, including national and international laws and regulations (guidelines)
Introduction to theory of science and how science is done (methods)
Innovation and entrepreneurship and welfare technology

Learning outcomes

The student should be able to:
Describe how the specialist health service and the medical laboratories are organized and function when illness occurs
Describe health policy bodies that govern various parts of the Norwegian health care service and explain the various levels, relevant laws, regulations and agreements
Outline requirements, priorities and goals set for the health care service
Describe the main principles of the Norwegian “Samhandlingsreformen”
Describe, discuss and reflect over consepts of health, illness, disease and quality of life
Describe what epidemiology is and what it can be used for
Read research articles and make use of research results
Describe and give examples of medical technology and medical research
Discuss the advantages, disadvantages and ethical dilemmas of medical technology and medical research
Describe the objectives of legislation regulating medical technology and medical research in Norway
Identify values, ethical principles, and ethical theories at stake in assessing ethical challenges with medical technology and medical research
Be able to explain how the regional committees for medical and health research ethics are structured and function
Be able to describe guidelines for good research ethics
Know about innovative thinking and innovation processes and understand how an innovative idea can be put into action
Explain the concepts of innovation, entrepreneurship and welfare technology
Explain the content of an innovation process using a strategy / business plan
Apply relevant theory to outline a strategy / business plan on an innovative idea
Implement parts of a strategy / business plan

Teaching methods

Lectures, group work, seminars, innovationcamp.
Lectures/groupwork including tutorial: 25 hrs. Seminar: 5 hrs. Innovationcamp: 22 hrs. Self study: 108 hrs.
