About this course

Content

The principle, process, evaluation of results, and quality management. Chemical and enzymatic reaction principle, measuring methods including spectrophotometry, emission of light, electrochemistry, chromatography, and electrophoresis, calibration of measuring methods, validation of methods, reference values, preanalytical, analytical and biological variables, quality control and quality management of laboratory practice.

Learning outcomes

After attending the course, the student is able to
- explain quantitative methods commonly used in medical laboratories.
- use a range of methods and analytical instruments commonly used in medical laboratories and understand how the instruments are working.
- explain the impact of preanalytical influence on a range of analytical results.
- assess the quality of analytical results according to given rules.
- plan and perform method comparison studies, and evaluate a method according to desirable quality specifications.

Teaching methods

Lectures and 4 labcourses, including written and oral assessments. Expected total workload: Lectures: 27 hrs. Labcourses: 45 hrs. Self study: 138 hrs.
