Geography in Practice - GIS and Statistics

The course is about geographical information systems (GIS) and statistics. Students get insight into how to use GIS for data capture (especially from aerial photographs and satellite imagery), description with maps, analysis and presentation (particulalry thematic mapping). Students also get insight into how to use descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, correlation and simple linear regression) on geographical issues.

Knowledge: The course provides an introduction to quantitative methods and the use of tabular data, maps and images in geographic information systems (GIS).
Skills: This course provides a practical introduction to preparation, analysis and presentation of data in both statistical software packages (SPSS) and geographic information systems (GIS).
General competence: The course encourages critical reflection on method.

6 hours interactive lectures and 4 hours seminar, on-line Learning modules and 14 hours of exercises/project.
