French Literary and Linguistic Theory: Text Studies and Project Planning

This course offers an overview of a range of different theoretical approaches to texts. At the same time, the course has a practical objective: to assist students preparing to write a master's thesis by giving an introduction to research methods and how to compose a project proposal.

The course deals with a range of central theories within modern linguistics and literature studies, discussing possible applications of these theories in relation to choice of topic for MA theses.

French-language texts (fiction and text corpora) will be analysed in light of central theoretical issues. Studying literary works will also give students insight into the cultural, political and historical contexts of these works.

Candidates who have completed this course
- have knowledge of important theories and concepts within modern linguistics and literature studies.
- are able to make use of these theories and concepts to analyse linguistic and literary texts.
- have increased their knowledge of a selection of French literary works and their historical context.
- know how to write a research project proposal in French.

Online classes in cooperation with the university of Bergen.

Obligatory assignments:
- An oral presentation, for instance an Adobe Connect-presentation, related to the literary works on the syllabus
- A written draft of the project proposal

Obligatory assignments are valid for two semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).
