French grammar and phonology 2

The course covers central theoretical aspects of French grammar, such as the temporal system and more complex sentence structures (e.g. interrogative sentences, subordinate clauses, negation). Contrastive aspects between Norwegian and French are important. Students work on both theoretical and practical aspects of grammar individually and in groups.

Furthermore, the course covers central aspects of French phonology, such as liaison, schwa, rhythmic groups and prosody. Students practice transcriptions. The main focus is on pronunciation over word boundaries and sentence prosody.

Knowledge

Candidates who have passed this course:

- know syntactic terminology

- can explain core differences in the use of tense in Norwegian and French

- can discuss central aspects of the semantics of tense in French

- can give a basic description of the French phonetic system

Skills

Candidates who have passed this course:

- can use syntactic terminology in descriptions of complex sentence structures

- are proficient in the central rules of pronunciation relating to the sentence

- can express themselves in both written and spoken French, level A2/B1 in the Common European Framework

General competence

Candidates who have passed this course:

- have a basic understanding of differences between languages

- can utilize their knowledge to support further language learning

Lectures and group sessions taught in French. Oral and written proficiency training. Students are expected to actively participate in seminars, group sessions and presentations.

75% mandatory attendance (in lectures and seminars)

The absence limit is intended to cover normal sick leave and similar situations.

Therefore, you will not be granted valid absence from teaching based on a medical certificate, even if the absence is due to circumstances beyond your control.

In special cases, agreements for exemption can be made with the course coordinator, preferably at the start of the semester.

Compulsory assignments

• 75 % attendance in all teaching activities
• 1 group presentation in grammar
• 2 assignments in grammar
• 2 assignments in phonology

Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.

For students following the programme in Language Studies with Teacher Education, at least one of the obligatory assignments must have a didactic focus.
