French grammar and phonology 1

The course is an introduction to central aspects of French grammar, such as basic syntax and verb morphology. Students practice basic syntactic analyses. The focus of the course is the relationship between the syntax of the sentence and its constituents, for example different types of word phrases and the use of pronouns.

The course also gives an introduction to and training in central rules for pronunciation in French. Students will use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to transcribe simple texts. The main focus is on the relationship between orthography and pronunciation.

Teaching involves group work and students' active participation in solving practical and theoretical exercises.

Knowledge

Candidates who have passed this course:

- Are proficient in elementary syntactic analysis and morphology

- Can master the use of French tense forms

- Can explain basic differences in Norwegian and French word order

Skills

Candidates who have passed this course:

- Can transcribe simple French texts

- Are proficient in the central rules of pronunciation in French

- Can express themselves in both written and spoken French, level A2/B1 in the Common European Framework

General competence

Candidates who have passed this course:

- Have a basic understanding of differences between languages

- Can utilize their knowledge to support further language learning

Lectures and group sessions. Oral and written proficiency training. Students are expected to actively participate in seminars, group sessions and presentations. The course is taught in French.

75% mandatory attendance (in lectures and seminars)

The absence limit is intended to cover normal sick leave and similar situations. Therefore, you will not be granted valid absence from teaching based on a medical certificate, even if the absence is due to circumstances beyond your control.

In special cases, agreements for exemption can be made with the course coordinator, preferably at the start of the semester.

Obligatory assignments: 4 assignments; the format of the individual assignments may vary depending on the course plan.

Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.
