Currents in Film Studies

FILM3012 is a master’s course that focuses on theoretical positions and methods in film studies.

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of the course the student has knowledge of:

• film studies as an academic tradition.
• the relationship and interaction between theory, history, and analysis of film.

Skills

Upon successful completion of the course the student knows how to:

• identify how different film research traditions relate to each other and what knowledge interests have governed them.
• reflect on film theory's role in the analysis and interpretation of film.
• discuss how central issues have been treated in various film-theoretical traditions.
• explain how development of film-historical knowledge has been characterized by different methodologies and conceptions of film as a medium.

Lectures, seminars and screenings.

This course can be taught in Norwegian or English.
