Nordic Film and Television

FILM1106 is a base level course that deals with cinema and television in the Nordic countries. The course is taught in English, and the student gains insight into trends and developments in contemporary Nordic film and television culture.

The course provides insight into the development of commercial successes, such as Nordic noir, important stakeholders and artists, and the characteristics of Nordic film and TV production. Through studies of film and TV formats, genres, creators, and individual works, students develop their analytical skills and understanding of both the common features and distinctive characteristics of contemporary Nordic film and television.

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student has knowledge of:

• contemporary cinema and television in the Nordic countries, with attention to cultural, artistic, and commercial contexts.
• popular and critical reception of contemporary Nordic cinema and television, both within the region and beyond.
• hallmarks of Nordic cinema and television institutions, and the Nordic production landscape.

Skills

After completing the course, the student can:

• identify and discuss important trends and developments in contemporary Nordic films and television series, and their production.
• relate their acquired knowledge to questions concerning Nordic culture, society and history.
• develop independent analyses of contemporary Nordic films and television series.
