Film in Society

FILM1105 is a course that focuses on the role of audiovisual media forms in society and how they influence and reflect cultural, aesthetic, and political conditions in the world arounds us. The course provides students with insight into key cultural, commercial, and ideological issues related to the significance of film and other audiovisual media forms in society.

Central to the course are the political, economic, and technological contexts that influence the development and content of these media forms, as well as the relationship between production, distribution, and reception.

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student has knowledge of:

• The role of film in society, both as a commercial industry, as an art form, and as a source of societal insights.
• The social, political, cultural, technological, and economical role of film.
• Theories about ideology, class, ethnicity, gender relations and violence in film.
• The relationship between film production, distribution and reception.
• National and international film and television institutions, such as production and distribution systems, financial support schemes, and film criticism.

Skills

After completing the course, the student can:

• conduct academic analyses discussing the relationship between film and society.
• contextualise and discuss the role of audiovisual media forms today.

Lectures, screenings and seminars.

This course can be taught in Norwegian and English.
