Film in Society

FILM1103 is a base level course that focuses on the role of film in the world around us. The course gives the student insight into key cultural, commercial and ideological issues regarding the importance of film in society.

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student has knowledge of:

• the role of film in society, both as a commercial industry, as an art form, and as a source of societal insights.
• ideology, class, ethnicity, gender relations and violence in film.
• cinema's institutions, such as production and distribution systems, financial support schemes, film criticism, and censorship.

Skills

After completing the course, the student can:

• conduct academic film analyses discussing the relationship between film and society.

Lectures, screenings, and written assignments. Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian, but may take place in English. Students are required to stay updated on information from the department or course director via Blackboard.
