About this course

Content

The course aims to provide students with a thorough introduction to patient-oriented pharmaceutical services and interaction with other health personnel in the specialist health service. The focus is on pharmaceutical services related to distribution, drug information, galenic production, preparation and preparation of drugs, quality assurance of drug handling and other tasks, so that students gain broad knowledge of the pharmacist's role in the specialist health service.

There is a special focus on clinical pharmacy and the pharmacist's other clinical work, including written and oral health communication based on evidence-based drug use. The course also provides a thorough introduction to the pharmacokinetics of drugs (absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion).

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • explain legal issues within pharmaceutical legislation and other regulation in the area of ​​pharmaceuticals in secondary health care and thus understand how different pharmaceutical services can contribute to better drug treatment
  • explain how society, through organizational and technical factors, seeks to promote the rational and economical use of pharmaceuticals in secondary health care
  • apply communication skills in interaction with other health personnel
  • acquire theoretical and methodological knowledge in order to be able to explain and assess the pharmacological treatment of patient groups where one strives to adapt the treatment to the individual patient.

Skills

After completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • communicate health information to health care professionals and patients both orally and in writing
  • solve practical pharmacy challenges based on the principles of rational pharmacotherapy.
  • perform medication reconciliation and review drug treatment at the patient level, as well as conduct drug discussions with patients
  • explain how physiological changes (both in healthy individuals and diseases) affect drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion.
  • assess the bioequivalence of drugs based on pharmacokinetic parameters.
  • apply selected mathematical models to calculate drug plasma concentrations under different conditions and dosage regimens.

General competence

After completing the course, the student will have an understanding of:

  • legal, technical and organizational issues related to the production and preparation of medicines in hospital pharmacies
  • professional responsibility and professional role distribution for pharmacists and other healthcare personnel

Teaching methods

Teaching is provided in the form of lectures, exercises (case studies) and 8 weeks of supervised internship at a hospital pharmacy, where students will also solve specific tasks related to various processes in the pharmacy.
