Introduction to the Humanities, Language and Literature Studies

EXFAC0017 Introduction to the humanities, language and literature studies is course for students enrolled in the Bachelor’s program in Foreign Languages, the Bachelor’s program in Scandinavian Studies, the Bachelor’s program in Comparative Literature and the M.A. in Language Studies with Teacher Education.

Course goals:
The course introduces students to debates about the place of the humanities in the society and provides an overview of language and literary studies as academic disciplines. The course also introduces students to basic research skills required of humanities scholars. Finally, students will learn the importance of critical reflection and they will practice how to engage with the general public and academic communities, actively and democratically.

A student who successfully completes EXFAC0017

- understands the importance of the humanities to the society
- is familiar with the history and general terminology of language studies and literary studies
- has basic academic research and communication skills (involving writing, collaboration, academic honesty and documentation practices in the field)
- is able to recognize some of the basic genres and text types

The course consists of lectures and groups/seminars. The groups/seminars are hands-on workshops. Over the course of the semester, students will have to complete written assignments presented by lecturers.

Formal requirement: The written assignments should be about 2000 words long in total. All the assignments must be approved in order to take the exam.
