Language of instruction is English.

Central approaches to translation within the field of Translation Studies will be presented and discussed. Focus will will be on the interdisciplinarity of the field, and on translation as a linguistic, literary, cultural as well as a pedagogical cultural practice.

Candidates who have passed this course have

• a broad overview of the main approaches to translation as presented within the field of Translation Studies
• knowledge about different methodologies that can be used in studying translation and translations
• insight into translation as a linguistic, literary and as well as a cultural undertaking
• insight into how translation has been and can be used as a tool for language teaching and learning

Skills

Candidates who have passed this course are able to

• describe and reflect on central ideas and issues within the field of Translation Studies
• use models and concepts from Translation Studies to analyse translations within different genres
• describe and analyse different types of translation problems in translations they have produced themselves
• describe and reflect on translation as a linguistic, literary and as well as a cultural undertaking
• describe and reflect on how translation has been and can be used as a tool for language teaching and learning

Video presentations and topical seminars (where the week’s topic is explored through task-based learning, collaborative writing and group discussions, under guidance). Students are required to use the course learning platform regularly.

Students should expect that this 7.5 credit course equates with approximately 10 hours of work per week, including teaching time.
