Internationalization and Pluralism

The course offers an introduction to multiculturalism and pluralism and invites discussion about how these different approaches for dealing with ethnic diversity may be desirable, acceptable or unfortunate in various areas. Migration and integration as questions of international law and human rights in a vertical perspective. Experience with intercultural meetings between pupils of differing ethnicity in Norwegian schools.

The student
- has knowledge of the main features of theories about ethnic diversity/intercultural meetings
- can apply the conceptual framework around intercultural meetings and various strategies for coping with ethnic diversity
- has knowledge of assimilation, integration and segregation as empirical phenomena in Norway and in international settings
- can explain and discuss conflict situations in national and international communities with emphasis on the application of insights drawn from international law, human rights and international arenas
- can discuss rhetoric and reality around multiculturalism and tolerance
- can discuss the consequences that various immigration policy choices may have for schools generally and the social science subjects in particular
