Diversity, identity and community

The course addresses subject didactic issues related to knowledge of different perspectives on identity and identity construction. The course aims to shed light on and discuss identity conflicts from a historical perspective nationally and internationally. Diversity, Identity and fellowship in culture and politics and experience with cultural meetings between pupils of different ethnicities in Norwegian schools are highlighted through relevant examples from different social groups, and are central elements of the subject's social science didactic approach

Knowledge

The candidate

• has advanced knowledge of central theories of identity construction and communities in didactic contexts
• has in-depth knowledge of identity conflicts and identity politics and how these phenomena are or can be central elements of culture and politics both nationally and internationally and how the concepts can be used in learning processes
• has in-depth knowledge of assimilation and integration strategies as empirical and theoretical phenomena, and about intercultural learning in school

Skills

The candidate

• can discuss the emergence of national and transnational identities, including the link between nationalism, democracy and belonging - assess the significance of changes in the political system, media development and consumption trends in the light of identity, community and diversity
• can discuss issues of intercultural learning and multicultural work in school

General competence

The candidate

• can analyze youth culture and youth identity and the consequences, changes can or should have for education in the school concept, have or can have
• can reflect and gain an understanding of cultural differences - can develop social science didactic issues related to diversity, identity and community

Lectures, seminars and student presentations.

Obligatory activities

1 oral presentation and 1 written task. Attendance in teaching is required to carry out mandatory activities.
