Practical Introduction to Arts-based Research

The course provides a practical and theoretical introduction to key arts-based research strategies and approaches the performing arts from a research perspective. Students engage throughout the course in practice-based artistic exploration and relevant theory, taking as their point of departure their own area of specialization, with the emphasis directed either towards dramaturgy or applied theatre. The dissemination of research takes the form of performative, stage-based work as well as written reflection. The course aims for the sustainable use of materials in both process and dissemination.

Students are prepared, both practically and theoretically, for the arts-based researcher role that will lead up to the independent master’s project.

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have knowledge about:

• different practical and theoretical approaches to arts-based research methods, and the relevance of these to the student’s master’s project
• theatre as a dramaturgical, technical, organizational, and performative space for research.
• research dissemination, both performative and written
• documentation methods within art-based research processes
• research ethical assessments

Skills

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will know how to:

• plan, implement, disseminate and evaluate ones own art-based research project in the light of relevant theories
• collaborate based on an understanding of collective research processes
• reflect on one's own research process
• develop critical reflection of use of resources and ethical considerations

The course consists of lectures, seminars, exercises and supervision.

Students are required to keep up to date on messages from the department and/or lecturer via Canvas.

• Written assignment
