Arts education

This course seeks to advance understandings of arts education research and pedagogies. The aim of this course is to enhance comprehension, articulation and critical engagement with key views on art, learning and teaching in the arts and research, and how different views influence practices and research within arts education. Course activities explore current methodologies, practices and theories in arts, arts pedagogies and arts education. Course participants explore arts as social change, how they carry and share their own stories, and own and others' ways of articulating arts education knowledge. The course participants engage in inquiry led peer review and dialogue between students and teachers, which fosters the development of a learning community.

Knowledge:

The candidate

• thoroughly understands research in and with the arts, including and emphasising arts-based, practice-led research as well as theory-driven, critical and decolonial research.
• has advanced knowledge of diverse views and values of the arts in theory, practice, teaching and learning, and research.
• has advanced knowledge about art as social change, in theory and practice
• thoroughly understands the key ideas behind the theories, pedagogies and methodologies presented.

Skills:

The candidate

• can confidently and critically explore different views, values, theories and methodologies in arts education and arts education research
• can confidently and critically present diverse views on arts education pedagogies and research.
• can examine the theoretical and methodological options available and how they might inform choices during teaching, and the research and writing processes in arts education.

General competence:

The candidate

• is capable of supporting inquiry led student peer review processes.
• can analyse and apply current theory and methodologies on arts education practice, writing and research in order to contribute to new thinking and innovation processes.
• can disseminate a diverse range of approaches and understandings to arts education research, practice and writing.
• can apply their knowledge in new areas in order to carry out advanced projects in arts education.

Learning methods

The teaching is organized as four (4) intensive seminars at campus in Trondheim.

Candidates will learn through the following methods:

• Exploring conceptual dispositions
• Case study
• Reading, creating, analysis, and peer discourse
• Written and multimodal expression, with self and peer review
• Self-directed learning though independent projects
• Constructing a learning community of practice with fellow students

Diverse sites for learning might be used during this course, which might include visits to urban or nature outdoors spaces as well as to different arts (educational) institutions like performance venues, museums, cinemas or concert halls. Possible entrance fees will be paid for by Department for Teacher Education. Students’ collaborations with different arts educational institutions will be encouraged. The organization of collaboration with and research at these institutions must be arranged by the students themselves.

Compulsory activities

There are four (4) compulsory activities in this course. These compulsory activities must be approved in order to be able to deliver the examination assignments. They are as follows:

3. Pecha kucha presentation

4. Participation during intensive seminars: Participation is required to be 75%.
