Guided practical training in social work

Through the course, the students will acquire knowledge and experience in the planning and implementation of social work, as well as reflecting on social work from the perspective as a professional social worker. The practical study builds upon the knowledge and experience the students have from the subject of social work in the two previous academic years.

In this course, students will have practice placement in social work, either in Norway or abroad. Practice placement for students in Norway will take place in Trøndelag. Practice placement abroad will take place according to NTNU´s agreements with relevant collaborators, and the students application.

The student shall Acquire knowledge to be able to:

• describe and discuss current social policy and legal frames related to the workplace's tasks
• explain and give reasons for interaction and collaboration with institutions relevant to the practice site
• describe and defend knowledge about human perspectives and values in social work practice, professional ethics and various ethical theories
• consider and discuss the applicability of theories and methods in social work
• recognize and discuss the relationship between the personal private and professional dimensions in social work
• discuss and use supervision as a phenomenon, aid and support

Develop skills to be able to:

• apply research-, experience-, and userbased knowledge in their professional practice structure and conduct a professional conversation
• restrain coordinated and interdisciplinary collaboration between different services
• identify and handle ethical dilemmas in practice
• show attention to power-issues in relations between individuals and systems
• facilitating user involvement in interaction with clients / users
• restrain the use of digital tools which are relevant in practice, including awareness of knowledge about digital security, its possibilities and limitations in social work

Develop general competence which includes to:

• explore and consider a situation from different perspectives and understandings
• be able to reflect upon and realize knowledge which contributes to equality in welfare services
• engage in and utilize professional supervision for consciousness and reflection over prevailing practice and attitudes
• showing responsibility for developing one's own professionality
• be able to convey professional subjects and exchange viewpoints and experiences with collaborators, and through this contribute to quality in practice

Practice studies (17 weeks), individual studies, supervision, written assignments and participation in discussion forums on Canvas, lectures, training, work in groups, presentations.
