Introduction to Fine Art Studies

This course focuses on building basic skills and knowledge to work independently and creates a framework to take initiative for developing collective projects.

The course process requires experimentation, development and reflection in the artistic work that is at the core of the BFA programme. Students begin to develop artistic practice in dialogue with their supervisors and peers. Artistic practice, public presentations, communication and continual showing of work are central components for learning.

When finishing the course the student will:

• be familiar with the current discourses on contemporary art
• know about key concepts of worldly art histories.
• have the skills to participate, reflect and communicate in a collective artistic work frame.
• be able to initiate the development of an art practice by experimenting with different methods, materials and techniques.

Introduction to NTNU and to the academy. Start-up activities where students work in small groups both inside and outside the academy. Key words: collaboration, group discussion, experimentation, process.

Tutorials with supervisors and fellow students and development of artistic projects. Critical group interaction in the shape of meetings with fellow students and supervisors.

Preparation procedure for the first year show including shared coordination, tutorials and art theoretical perspectives in relation to key concepts and movements in contemporary art.

Participation in learning activities such as supervision, supervision group and course specific seminars and projects is mandatory.

Specific conditions

Approved compulsory assignments are valid in the present semester only.

Due to lack of Scandinavian speaking teachers, this course will be taught in English.
