Introduction to Fine Art Studies

Basic skills and knowledge to begin to work independently in studios and workshops.

To become familiar with the contemporary art discussion that is ongoing at the Academy.
To acquire the skills to participate in group work.
To begin to develop an individual art practice by testing out different media and methods.

Introduction to NTNU and to the academy.
Start-up workshop with an external course leader (guest artist, curator, etc). Students work in small groups both inside and outside the academy.Key words: collaboration, group discussion, experimentation, process.
Material knowledge: a course that encompasses basic instruction in the use of the academy’s workshops and facilities, combined with classes, lectures and discussions around material practices within contemporary art. Parallel, intensive introduction courses in the use of the workshops and facilities. Participation in these courses is mandatory in order to gain access to the facilities ion future.
Writing / Art. A short introduction course on how to write for, within and about Artistic practice. Students shall, for example, familiarise themselves with how to formulate a simple project description.
Contemporary art history & theory part 1. Lecture / seminar series that will provide a foundation for understanding key concepts and movements in contemporary art. Participation in the course is obligatory for 1st. Year BFA students.
Tutorials with main supervisor and second supervisor, and development of an individual art project.
An optional group study trip may be organized during the first or second semester. This will vary from year to year.
Semester assessment.
Participation in the annual Open Academy exhibition, as well as a formal semester assessment. A short text summing up the semester’s activeitieds is to be delivered to the main and second supervisors by 1st. December.
The common NTNU introductory course may take place this semester.
