Archaeology in Iron Age and Early History

The starting point is the Iron Age cultures in Europe and the connection between the European and Mediterranean cultures. The developement in Europe from tribal societies to national states when Europe developed into a religious and cultural unity, is closely viewed as the conditions in the Nordic countries are studied. The formation of towns and national states, the signification the church and social and economic networks on different levels are emphasized.

According to the course curriculum, a candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome (defined as knowledge and skills):

Knowledge:
The candidate has attained
- broad knowledge of the Nordic Iron Age and early history from a European perspective, as well as an overview of the archaeological source material from these periods

Skills:
The candidate has acquired skills to
- describe and discuss relevant topics within the Nordic Iron Age and early history, as well as viewing the Nordic cultural area in a broader perspective

Lectures and self-study. In order to sit the exam, students must submit and get approved two written assignments (4-8 pages, 12-point Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing.)The written assignments are only given in the semester when the subject is taught, but these are valid for this and the subsequent semester.
