Archaeology in Societies before literacy: Stone- and Bronze Age

The course will focus on development from the earliest Stone Age cultures in Europe to the beginning of our era. In the latest Stone Age the societies of hunter- and gatherers, early farming and fram animals will be emphasized, in addition to the development of patterns of society, establishment of hierarchs and lines of contact through the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. The course has a broad European perspective, but its main focus lies on the Nordic countries.

According to the course curriculum, a candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome (defined as knowledge and skills):

Knowledge
The candidate has attained
- broad knowledge of the Nordic Stone and Bronze Ages from a European perspective, as well as an overview of the source material from these periods

Skills
The candidate has acquired skills to
- describe and discuss relevant topics within the Nordic Stone and Bronze Ages, as well as viewing the Nordic cultural area in a broader context

Lectures and self-study. In order to sit the exam, students must submit and get approved two written assignments (4-8 pages, 12-point Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing.)The written assignments are only given in the semester when the subject is taught, but these are valid for this and the subsequent semester.
