Architecture and Architectural Design Knowledge 2

The course provides knowledge of strategies and methods for developing sustainable architecture in urban environments. Contemporary architecture and urban development are discussed in relation to sustainability and current and future societal challenges. Understanding learning processes and reflecting on one’s own development is central to the course.

Knowledge

The candidate:

• Has basic knowledge of architectural theory, conceptual foundations, and history.
• Has knowledge of the concepts of urban space, morphology, typologies, and function.
• Has basic knowledge of information retrieval, citation practices, and copyright in academic texts and architectural documentation.
• Has basic knowledge of architectural drawings and documents, as well as urban and participatory planning models.

Skills

The candidate:

• Can critically assess architectural quality.
• Can contribute to architectural critique in essay form at a basic level.
• Understands and can reflect on their own learning process.
• Has skills in digital workflows.

General competence

The candidate:

• Can communicate architectural work and reflection at a professional and academic level through text and graphic representation.
• Takes independent responsibility for their own learning and professional development.
• Is able to broaden their understanding of architecture, urbanism, and urban form.
• Can contribute actively, constructively, and productively in group work, taking on different roles and responsibilities while ensuring the quality of the overall outcome.
• Can discuss contemporary ethical issues and understands the interrelations between societal development, urban development, and architectural design.

Lectures, seminars, and workshop exercises are conducted in parallel with independent study. Teaching is largely organized as group supervision and student-active learning activities. The course is carried out in close collaboration with AAR4466.

Excursions may be included as part of the teaching. At the start of the semester, students will be informed whether excursions are mandatory or voluntary. Mandatory excursions are free of charge; voluntary excursions may require a student fee. Students who do not participate in voluntary excursions will be offered an alternative learning arrangement.
