Faglig innhold

The course contains certain topics in concrete technology including constituent materials, hydration, mix design, properties of fresh and hardened concrete as well as durability and deterioration mechanisms. Furthermore, the environmental challenges as well as technologies and solutions for sustainable production and deployment of concrete are presented in the course.

Læringsmål

After the course, the students should be able to decide the usability of concrete in different building and infrastructure projects, assess the impact of using concrete for sustainability performance aspects and propose solutions that leads to production and deployment of concrete with lower environmental impacts. Knowledge: -Knowledge of constituent materials and their effect on properties of fresh and hardened concrete -Knowledge of hydration and properties of the hydration products -Knowledge of concrete mix design and measurement of properties of fresh and hardened concrete -Knowledge of durability and typical deterioration mechanisms and controlling parameters -Knowledge of the environmental challenges of using concrete as a construction material -Knowledge of the application of material properties for sustainable construction -Knowledge of technologies and solutions for sustainable production and deployment of cement-based materials Skills: -Ability to design concrete mix with desired properties such as consistency, strength, durability and sustainability -Ability to produce concrete and control the properties of fresh and hardened concrete -Ability to assess determined production processes and propose methods to reduce the environmental impacts of the concrete production -Ability to assess the role of concrete and it’s functionality in the built environment General competence: The course will give knowledge on how to produce and deploy concrete according to sustainability performance aspects

Læringsformer og aktiviteter

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, e-learning, project work and assignments. The course will be made accessible for both on-campus and remote students. Every student is free to choose the pedagogic arrangement form that is best fitted for her/his own requirement. The lectures in the course will be given on campus and are open for both categories of students. Lectures that sum up the main issues in the lecture will also be available on internet through NTNU’s learning management system. Tutoring are given at campus in accordance to announced times. In addition, for remote students there will be at least one gathering at campus with mandatory attendance. In case of less than 4 students, the course will be based on self study. Hands in: -6 exercises. -2 compulsory laboratory exercis(es) Assessment methodology for examination Alphabetical scale, A (best) – F (fail) Teaching language is English. Teaching, tutoring, assignments and exam are given in English.
