The course has a main focus on errors in ARPA systems, operational aspects of marine seismic surveying with emphasis on interaction effects between vessel and in-sea hardware, advanced ship weather routing with emphasis on voyages in high latitudes, velocity-information GPS technology and intentional maneuvering at sea.

Læringsmål

At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- Understand how various reference points on a target echo affect the accuracy of radar plotting results.
- Estimate errors in ARPA data of various simplified shapes of a target.
- Understand how the low-frequency motion of a seismic vessel affects the dynamics of towed in-sea hardware.
- Utilize a simplified quasi-static cable model to analyze slowly-varying oscillations in depth of seismic streamer cables.
- Understand how vessel-cable interaction effects can be minimized or eliminated.
- Understand how ship weather routing in high latitudes can be implemented in existing algorithms and systems.
- Know the principles of velocity-information GPS technology and understand how this can be applied as sensor input to decision-support systems for ship officers.
- Understand how maneuvering to required approach parameters can be applied in search and rescue operations.

Læringsformer og aktiviteter

Lectures and compulsory exercises. Case studies. A project exercise will count 30 % in the grading.
