Faglig innhold

The course is mainly concentrating on formulating, analysing and solving problems related to the planning and execution of ship voyages with emphasis on navigational safety. Core elements are on collision and grounding avoidance at sea, ship weather routing and assessment of ship-handling difficulties in congested and topographically restricted waterways. Ship-to-ship operations are emphasized with a focus on the maneuvering challenges in approaching another vessel in open waters for cargo transfer. The interaction effect and technological solutions that can provide adequate decision-support to the officer in charge are highlighted.

Læringsmål

At the end of the course, the student should be able to: - Understand the principles of various methods to avoid collision and grounding and the limitations in technological solutions implemented onboard navigation bridges. - Understand the effect of speed-aspect ratio in high-speed craft navigation. - Understand the principles of ship weather routing; optimization criteria and methods, forecast of weather and ocean environment, speed reduction in waves. - Utilize approximations and simplified methods for critical assessment of safe ship-handling and navigation. - Understand the decision-making cycle with situational and spatial awareness of the human operator in charge of the navigation. - Explain the principles in designing decision-support system for ship-to-ship operations and know how interaction effects can be presented. - Work with developers and end users of advanced maritime IT systems aiming to develop and operate new and improved technology to further enhance navigational safety and operational efficiency.

Læringsformer og aktiviteter

Lectures and compulsory exercises. Case studies. A project exercise will count 30 % in the grading.
