Faglig innhold

Through concrete ethnographic examples, you will learn about themes that are central in ethnographic and anthropological research in and about Ethiopia. You will engage with classical ethnography as well as modern approaches. Topics covered include livelihoods, social inequality, land tenure, ethnicity, modernization, and urbanization.

Læringsmål

Upon completion of the course, you will have good knowledge of themes that are central in anthropology and anthropological research in and about Ethiopia, from the early explorations during imperial time up to the present-day federal state. You will have developed the ability to discern between different anthropological epochs in the study of Ethiopia, and you will have gained an empirically based understanding of themes and topics of relevance for the future of the country and its diverse population.  You will also have acquired advanced competence in academic writing.

Mandatory activity 

The mandatory activity in this course is a review of one monograph and a research paper on a topic of your choice. The mandatory activity will be assessed as approved or not approved. The mandatory activity has to be approved in order to qualify for the exam.
