Om emnet

Faglig innhold

Digital signal processing with a specific focus on audio signals. General principles for digital representation, analysis and processing. Classical signal processing techniques like FFT, granular techniques, modulation, filtering and audio effects are covered. Emphasis is put on listening, with training on recognition of the different techniques used.

Læringsmål

Knowledge:

The candidate

  • can recognize how digital representation affects audio quality, and relate features of a sound example to technical aspects that affect them
  • can explain the content of common methods for digital signal processing of audio. Furthermore, understands the relationship between the effect on the sound and the composition of processing components
  • has knowledge of specific music examples where each effect has been used

Skills:

The candidate

  • can implement common methods for digital signal processing in Csound
  • can, by listening, determine most of the digital effects used in a music production
  • can, by listening, suggest the parameter values used for these effects
  • can reproduce significant parts of an imagined sound image digitally

Læringsformer og aktiviteter

Lectures. Compulsory assignments and lab work. Information about exercises and requirements is given in Canvas at semester start. There will be up to 12 exercises.

Instruction is obligatory and demands minimum 80% attendance.
