The melting ice cap at the polar region makes way for new shipping routes and the exploration of the undiscovered oil and gas resources in arctic areas inaccessible in the past due ice coverage. Therefore, it is of vital importance to ensure that these operations in the high north are safe. This requires sound design concepts and regulations and clear regulatory decisions on how to determine the required safety level. However, the determination of the safety level involves various uncertainties and hence the necessity to introduce risk-based design methodologies besides a solid understanding of the design relevant actions. The latter consist typically of various types of ice induced loading as well as icing influenced by polar lows and cold climate besides global constraints such as darkness, remoteness, lack of infrastructure and emergency preparedness. Furthermore, this course will provide consequence assessment methodologies for the above-mentioned actions as well as mitigation measure strategies for the individual research topics of the participant. The course will be driven by the individual PhD-research topic, which shall be within the field of arctic sea transportation, to be carried out independently alongside the course as part of the assignment where a draft journal paper shall be prepared.

Læringsmål

Knowledge: This course will provide a deep understanding of the methodologies and tools needed and to be developed to carry out risk-based design of arctic transport vessels. Thereby it will be possible to further develop risk-based design methodologies for individual research area of interest. Skills: Therefore, the following specific objectives will be covered: a) Can understand the requirements and challenges of arctic sea transportation b) Can identify and analyse the uncertainties and mitigation measures related to the design of arctic sea transportation vessels and system c) Can understand and assess the design relevant actions and develop assessment methodologies for specific research problems d) Can understand and assess the economic factors determining the efficiency of arctic sea transportation General qualifications: Consequently, these objectives will lead to the following learning outcome: Can develop risk-based design methodologies of arctic transport vessels and systems. Required first-principal methods as well as engineering best practices will be know to assess the design relevant actions. Economic principals and assessment methods will be understood to assess the individual vessel performance as well as the overall transport system performance.

Læringsformer og aktiviteter

The course will be driven by the individual PhD-research topic to be carried out independently alongside the course as part of the assignment where a draft journal paper shall be prepared. The course consist of the following lectures (40h) and seminars (59h). In each seminar a short presentation of the current state of the individual research topic will be required, which will serve as a continuous evaluation and discussion basis. The final meeting will consist of the overall presentation of the assignment / individual research topic followed by a subsequent deadline to hand in the draft paper. To pass the course a score of at least 70 percent is required.
