Sonification and Sound design

The aim of the course is to develop knowledge of and practical experience with sonification, including sound design, interface implementation and perceptual analysis. The interface design process extends from requirements in the problem domain to evaluation of the auditory display.

Knowledge:
After completing the course the candidate:
- can identify and discuss fundamental principles of sonification as a means of conveying information through audio
- can critically evaluate the perceptual efficiency and aesthetic qualities of sound design in auditory displays

Skills:
After completing the course the candidate:
- can design aesthetically well-formed auditory displays
- can apply knowledge of auditory perception to ensure efficient mapping in the sonification design
- can design and implement auditory displays of multidimensional, static and dynamic data

The course will be based on a flipped classroom model with:
- a set of video lectures, reading assignments and online qualification tests
- a two-weeks intensive workshop (30 hours) with compulsory attendance, during which all students will implement a number of auditory displays - peer review of each others sonifications
