Om emnet

Faglig innhold

The course reflects on global approaches to aesthetics that have been developed in dialog with, in confrontation to or independently from the hegemony of Western philosophical traditions. It investigates historical and contemporary artistic practices based on cross-cultural exchange and new notions of modernity in the light of global transformations. There is a special focus on gaining insight of the direct or indirect impact of colonialism and the post-colonial condition, of global economies and transnational migration.

Læringsmål

The course will provide an understanding of aesthetics and an expanded notion of artistic form beyond the scope of a Eurocentric world view. The student can analyse conventional modes of knowledge production and canonisations from a Eurocentric perspective. The student is familiar with theories of colonial and post colonialism.

Læringsformer og aktiviteter

Through film screenings, close readings, lectures, assignments and group discussions the students will map, analyse and reflect on relevant theories and discourses.
Additional information will be provided at the start of the semester.
