The course is an introduction to Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Theory, methods, techniques and applications are illustrated in lectures, seminars, demonstrations and practical exercises. Issues that will be covered are: GIS concept, the raster and vector principles, data capture, data modelling, handling of attribute tabular data, spatial analysis and query, mapping layout etc.
Læringsmål
Knowledge: The functionality and operation of geographic information systems (GIS). Basic geographical data and reference systems, cartography and cartographic methods, relevant to the needs and scope of physical planning/urban planning. Data structures, data models and geographic / spatial analysis techniques that are used for examination and presentation of the plan base, plan presentation and impact analysis. Data sources and their use in analysis and planning.
Skills: Facilitation of geographical data in a GIS, preparation for analysis or design purposes. Basic design and editing work using GIS tools. The use of 2D and 3D for presentation of plan base and results in an easily understandable manner. Use of GIS functions for plan-oriented analysis of localization or consequences of plan implementation. Such analysis may include terrain, landscape and natural conditions, and / or transportation, land use, demographics or other specific man-made factors. General competence: to make use of acquired knowledge and skills solving a variety of tasks related to geographic analysis and physical planning.
