About this course

Content

The course is composed by theory elements from two themes: A) Solid waste management and recycling, and B) Industrial ecology analysis of waste systems. The student chooses, in collaboration with the teacher, theory elements from the themes above, so that this gives a good theoretical foundation for working on a specific problem in the field of waste management and industrial ecology. The theory elements cover issues about:
A1: waste amounts, types and generation.
A2: waste policy, legal framework and instruments.
A3: technologies for waste treatment and recycling.
A4: organisation of waste systems.
B1: material flow analysis for waste systems.
B2: life cycle analysis for waste systems.
B3: cost analysis for waste systems.
B4: efficiency analysis for waste systems.
The problem to be studied is to be developed in collaboration with the teacher and (if possible) an external company.

Learning outcomes

The student shall develop a high degree of theoretical understanding and knowledge of literature, methods and technical solutions in his/her work on a relevant problem within waste management and industrial ecology, as well as training in how to write a scientific article in the field.

Teaching methods

Seminars and tutored self studying; study visits to governmental agencies, firms or waste companies; individual project work on an agreed upon problem. The project shall be reported in the form of a scientific article with respect to later publication. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course.
