About this course
Content
This is a field/laboratory- based course with focus on field and laboratory work in environmental engineering. The topics include field work for urban stream hydraulics and metabolism. Stormwater management, how to design a sampling program, types of samples, grab versus time series. Lake hydrology and physical lake properties, including stratification, dissolved oxygen gradients. Determining limiting nutrients in lake systems and design of monitoring program. Field work for drinking water and waste water treatment, sampling points and type of samples. Focus on field techniques and laboratory analysis, water quality measurements, and data analysis. The duration of the course is 3 weeks, with 7.5 credits (studiepoeng). The course is made up of 14 days of teaching with 4 hours of teaching /field work each day + 2 hours of data analysis and report writing. Resulting in a total 84 hours.
Learning outcomes
The candidate should have knowledge on the important stream hydraulics and metabolism especially linked to urban streams. Know measurement techniques for discharge, and measurement techniques to measure metabolism and characterize the hydraulics of the stream. In addition the candidate should be able to process collected field data to solve hydrologic and water quality problems typically found in an urban setting. The candidate should be able to design a measurement campaign to characterize the waterbody or watershed (stormwater, lakes, and rivers) both from a hydrologic and water quality point of view. Further more the candidate should acquire the skills to identify types of data to collect, analysis to perform, where to look up procedures for laboratory work and field samples.
Teaching methods
Every week will have 1-2 days with lectures and background information followed by 2-3 days of field work and one day for data analysis and report writing.
